Safe disposal of medicine

If you have unused medicines or those that you do not need anymore, and need to be disposed, check if there is any instruction to dispose them on the label or the information leaflet. Do not flush medicines down the toilet. If there is no instruction on disposal, you can do the following:

* Take them out of the original container and mix them with an unwanted substance such as coffee grounds or used tea leaves,
* Put them in a sealable bag, empty can or other containers that can be closed. Ensure that they will not spill out,
* Place them in your household trash.

Some pharmacies at public hospitals or clinics accept unused medicines and have boxes or containers placed outside their premises for the purpose of collecting these medicines. Take advantage of this service.

Some medicines such as antibiotics cannot be simply thrown away. If in doubt about medicines disposal consult your pharmacist.
