Contamination of Cosmetic Products with Schedule Poison

           

       Consumers should be smart and selective when it comes to choosing their cosmetic products. They should be aware that scheduled poisons are only allowed to be used under medical supervision. They are regulated as pharmaceutical products thus can only be supplied by doctors or pharmacists.

       In Malaysia, cosmetic products are regulated under Control of Drugs and Cosmetic Regulations, 1984. Companies who want to place a new product in the local cosmetic market have to submit product details and relevant documents to the National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau (NPCB) before the product can be manufactured, imported or sold in the country. However, from 1^st January 2008, onwards, this system is replaced with a new procedure. Companies will only be required to notify or declare their compliance to the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive to the NPCB before manufacturing, import or sale by wholesale. Licenses for these activities are no longer needed. This means that it is easier for cosmetic products to be brought in our cosmetic market. Thus, it is even more important that the public can take initiative to identify the ingredients used in their skin care and not just buy any products which claim to be able to give a fair and unblemished look.

       As of end of 2008, Ministry of Health Malaysia had banned a total of 26 cosmetic products  which were found to be adulterated with scheduled poison.
